Do we need an independent device information repository? 2007/05/27 13:07 Karma: 0
Many MDM software vendors I speak to tell me that one of their key differentiators is the extent and or accuracy of their device databases. (This sounds like a lot of replication to me). Neanwhile, others that admit to having to buy data tell me that the quality of the data they buy is very poor.

Is there a case for an independent device database? Will device vendors support it? Who should do it, OMA? If it is not within their remit is this something DMF should tackle or help facilitate?

Your friendly user requirements champion. I think user requirements should drive feature and service development. You can check out my views here: http://www.devicemanagement.org.

I think it is a great idea/suggestion to have a data on different devices. We in Nokia have already started to do that and we are working to improve on what we already have as we speak.

Please take a look at http://forum.nokia.com/main/resources/documentation/device_mgmt/ dm_feature_tables.html to start with.

Also there is a great Nokia site http://www.s60.com/life/s60phones/browseDevices.do where you can check all the terminals based on the World's leading smartphone platform S60.

It will be a challenge to create a matrix that could show all the relevant features but let's hope we will make it happen. All help is more than appreciated.
