SEATTLE, Ore. June 30, 2008 -- Pelago, creators of the mobile social networking and discovery
service,
Whrrl, today announced new mobile support for the BlackBerry World 8830,
multiple Motorola RAZR models including the V3M, v3xx, V9, v9M, and the
Samsung M610. The new devices join current Whrrl-supported devices: the
BlackBerry Pearl and Curve, the Nokia N95, and soon the Apple iPhone.
Available for free to all Internet-connected Americans and now to
millions more mobile users, Whrrl provides an entirely new discovery
pathway for finding and sharing local knowledge with friends and
communities. At the nexus of social networking, local discovery and
user-generated content, Whrrl combines mapping and micro-blogging
technology into a unique social discovery experience that changes the
way people use virtual friend networks to shape their experiences in the
physical world.
“Not only are we now bringing Whrrl to more
and more people, but we’re giving them and our
existing users an incredible experience that in true Web 2.0 fashion is
continually improved through ongoing new feature and functionality
rollouts,” said Jeff Holden, Pelago CEO and
co-founder. “What our development team has
accomplished in the few short months since beta launch is a tremendous
achievement and certainly places Whrrl at the front of a very
competitive new market.”
In addition to the expanded mobile device support, Pelago has also
announced a number of enhancements to both the Web and mobile Whrrl
experiences.
The new mobile Whrrl experience features improved mapping capabilities
which can plot friends’ real-time locations on
the Whrrl map. In addition, the mapping experience on mobile Whrrl is
faster than ever and now allows users to filter the map to see only the
people, places and events that are important to them.
The Whrrl Web experience now offers the “what’s
on my map?” feature which provides users with
a helpful navigation menu for exploring places and events with the aid
of friends and dozens of targeted filter options to create a
user-customized view of the Whrrl map. With millions of locations and
events listed in Whrrl, the “what’s
on my map?” feature helps users quickly drill
down to their specific criteria and repopulates the Whrrl map using only
those results.
Another new mapping enhancement made to Whrrl’s
Web experience is the Whrrl Radar feature that provides users with
information on people, places and activities taking place beyond the
view of a user’s currently mapped location.
Still, another new feature to the Whrrl experience via the Web is the
ability for users to hide their Whrrl Feed in order to get a full screen
view of the Whrrl map.
Whrrl is available across the entire U.S. market with deep content
location and event content provided for Seattle, Portland, San
Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Austin, Chicago, Boston, New York,
Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Kansas City, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Denver,
Columbus and Miami.
