Telcel brings Mexico’s wireless internet to life with high-speed urban network

MEXICO CITY, Mexico  July 7, 2008 -- Telcel, Mexico’s leading wireless operator, has launched its third-generation (3G) high speed broadband network in several cities, bringing the power of the wireless internet to customers.

Telcel aims to attract new subscribers to its service through the offer of innovative services such as live video sharing, news and entertainment in the most important cities of Mexico nationwide.

Nokia Siemens Networks, one of Telcel’s preferred vendors of this technology, participate in this milestone project providing a solution combining infrastructure and services based on High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) standards built on its acclaimed Flexi BTS technology.

Third Generation (3G) wireless technology with High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) will allow Telcel’s customers to enjoy the benefit of broadband speeds throughout the new service areas on their mobile devices. This means faster data transmission through the mobile network at broadband speeds of up to 2 mega bits per second during peak times, as well as expanded voice capacity, in this initial launch.

“With the launch of the 3G network in Mexico, Telcel considers that all the customers will benefit from the powerful combination of a superfast network and a portfolio of next-generation 3G handsets that quickly deliver interactive content and applications anytime, anywhere to the handset or a PC connected via an access PC card or handset“

“Nokia Siemens Networks is confident that Telcel’s customers will love the new services being offered in the 3G launch, and will work closely in partnership with Telcel to bring more services to more of its customers in the future.

The beauty of our Flexi BTS technology is that it is a flexible platform on which future upgrades for even higher data speeds can be added very efficiently through SW upgrades. This again mean fast and efficient introduction of the next step which is Long Term Evolution (LTE) that further dramatically enhances the user experience of wireless data” said Armando Almeida, Head of Latin America for Nokia Siemens Networks.

The commercial launch of this 3G network will help Telcel to attract new customers through innovative high-speed data services and increased voice capacity, while also providing significant benefits to their existing subscribers.

Spain to extend leading-edge wireless railway communications along its new high-speed routes

MADRID, Spain / ESPOO, Finland  July 7, 2008 -- Nokia Siemens Networks will provide, operate and maintain a complete railway mobile communications solution for Spain’s rail administration ADIF to cover some 450 kilometers of the newly constructed high-speed tracks linking Madrid with the cities of Valencia and Albacete.

The project, which ensures passenger safety and railway traffic efficiency, while reducing operational costs, also extends Nokia Siemens Networks´ market leadership in railway communications in Spain as it remains the sole high-quality mobile communications supplier for ADIF high-speed lines designed for trains known as AVE.

“The experience jointly gathered by ADIF and Nokia Siemens Networks, who share the same objectives of deploying the projects in the required time and maintaining the network in perfect condition, is what allows us to offer excellent transportation to passengers with a very high level of safety and efficiency required of such type of installations,” said Mariano Moyano, Installations Executive Director at ADIF.

The current project, which is to be completed within 30 months, covers about 450 kilometers of the tracks from Torrejón de Velasco-Motilla to Valencia and Albacete. The system will provide communications for trains running at up to 350 km/h. The single streamlined digital radio system for railway communications, or GSM-R, carries signaling and operational information directly to the driver, enabling higher speeds and greater traffic density with improved safety.

“We are proud to support ADIF’s ambitious project to build Europe’s largest high-speed train network that would link not only all Spain, but also provide fast international connections with our railway communications solution,” said Agustin Menchen in charge of Nokia Siemens Networks business with Railways in Spain.

Nokia Siemens Networks has been working in partnership with ADIF, implementing GSM-R on the remaining 1,700 km that make up the high-speed railway network in Spain since 2003, when it brought the first high-speed GSM-R application online in Spain.

Under the current contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will supply a complete GSM-R radio solution with network management as well as services including network implementation to allow seamless and timely launch and network design to ensure optimum network investment, coverage and capacity. Nokia Siemens Networks will operate the network on behalf of ADIF and provide network maintenance with round-the-clock monitoring, remote or on-site troubleshooting as well as user administration.
