TAMPA, Fla. Sept. 9, 2008 -- Syniverse Technologies and Colibria today
announced a breakthrough
approach to deliver messaging solutions for
mobile operators and their subscribers. The innovative messaging hub
solution will deliver seamless interworking between operators for IM,
SMS, MMS and presence applications. Syniverse is a leading provider of
technology and business solutions for the global telecommunications
industry, and Colibria is the leading global provider of instant
messaging and presence solutions.
“As mobile messaging continues to grow at
double- and triple-digit rates among subscribers worldwide, there is a
need for more robust means to break the barriers between the various
forms of messaging,” said Tony Holcombe,
President and CEO of Syniverse. “Where other
vendors talk about ‘next generation’
messaging, or only focus on IM or SMS alone, the Syniverse-Colibria
partnership introduces a new business model to interconnect and
interwork all flavors of messaging and all mobile operators.”
The new model focuses on solving the complex issues of interconnecting
mobile operators for the exchange of IM, SMS and MMS traffic as well as
subscriber presence information. The solution will ensure that
communication can occur regardless of a subscriber’s
location or message type.
This IM-focused messaging hub is one of several approaches Syniverse is
developing in partnership with leading companies around the globe to
provide mobile operators with seamless interoperability to deliver the
voice and data services demanded by subscribers at ever-increasing rates.
Keith Gibson, CEO of Colibria, said combining the award-winning Colibria
IM and presence product portfolio with Syniverse’s
capabilities, as the industry’s preeminent
provider of interoperability services, will result in a world-class
messaging product that will be critical to the success of mobile
operator networks today.
“Together we will provide the first true hub
for multiple messaging formats, giving operators a reliable,
cost-effective means for allowing their subscribers to use their
messaging technology of choice,” Gibson said. “Where
text messaging once captured the public's imagination, today's consumers
are searching for new, exciting and interactive ways of communicating
with individuals, groups and communities. Rather than replacing voice or
existing messaging technologies, IM combined with presence represents a
complementary and additional form of mobile communication.”
Pamela Clark-Dickson, editor of Mobile Messaging Analyst, which
is published by Informa Telecoms & Media, said interoperability between
mobile operator networks was essential to the adoption and usage of SMS
and MMS, and will similarly influence the penetration of other mobile
messaging types, including mobile IM.
"Informa forecasts that the global messaging market will grow at an
average of 18 percent a year to 2012," said Clark-Dickson. “SMS,
MMS and mobile IM will generate 2.5 trillion messages globally in 2008,
rising to 4.8 trillion messages by 2012. Clearly the ability for
subscribers to exchange messages across mobile operators' networks,
regardless of the message type, will be a key factor in ensuring
continued growth in messaging traffic and revenues."
Syniverse and Colibria are at CTIA-IT in San Francisco, California, from
September 10-12; Syniverse is at Booth 701 and Colibria at MR-524.
