Nextel Mexico Selects Telcordia for Number Portability Print E-mail
PISCATAWAY, NJ  Oct. 7, 2008 -- Two months after leading the deployment of wireline and wireless

number portability in Mexico, Telcordia today announced that Nextel Mexico, one of the world's leading providers of fully integrated wireless communication services, is the latest Tier 1 service provider to successfully implement the Telcordia® Number Portability Gateway. This will bring the added choice and convenience of number portability to Mexican residents.

Headquartered in Mexico City, Nextel Mexico provides service to more than 2.4 million customers in more than 26 cities. By endorsing number portability in Mexico and using the Telcordia Number Portability Gateway, Nextel Mexico is making it easier for consumers and enterprises to switch to its advanced network, which features digital cellular voice services, data services, wireless Internet access and Nextel Direct Connect® and International Direct Connect™, a digital two-way radio feature.

The Telcordia product enables Nextel Mexico to improve its competitive position by automating the porting process to reduce costs and enhance the customer experience. The Telcordia Number Portability Gateway automates and streamlines the porting process for Nextel Mexico consumer and business users as they switch service providers.

"The Telcordia Number Portability Gateway lets Nextel Mexico turn a regulatory requirement into a competitive advantage," said Richard Jacowleff, President, Interconnection Solutions, Telcordia. "By reducing number portability's cost and complexity, the Number Portability Gateway enables Nextel Mexico to add customers efficiently and quickly, so they begin driving revenue within hours instead of days. At the same time, customers of other wireless and wireline operators can switch to Nextel Mexico quickly and easily."

In March 2008, Telcordia was selected by COFETEL to provide the number portability clearinghouse solution in Mexico. The solution was available for commercial use in July 2008. The Number Portability Gateway product was instrumental in helping Nextel Mexico meet the tight regulatory timelines. The Telcordia product provides Nextel Mexico with a single, operator-based control point for managing the complex interfaces, messaging processing and transaction data associated with number portability. This enables Nextel Mexico to boost revenue and achieve operational efficiencies by automating the porting process and avoiding the cost typically associated with manual porting processes.
