SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. Oct. 27, 2008 -- Envivio Inc., a leading technology provider of IP video
convergence encoding solutions from mobile to HD, today announced that its Mobile Series™ video encoding platform has been installed by MEO Mobile – the mobile TV service from the mobile network subsidiary of Portugal Telecom. MEO Mobile has used the Envivio platform to upgrade and expand its mobile streaming service, enabling it to deliver 37 channels of high quality broadcast TV, as well as a wide variety of Video On Demand (VOD) content.
Portugal Telecom is the dominant mobile network operator in Portugal with over 6 million subscribers. The MEO Mobile service has been in operation since mid 2006 and has a large existing subscriber base which has benefited from the recent service enhancement.
The MEO Mobile service now delivers 23 live channels and 14 playlist channels, all featuring the National and International news, sports and entertainment content that subscribers are accustomed to watching on their home TVs. In addition, Portugal Telecom´s mobile network provides a VOD service which allows subscribers easy on-demand access to highlights of popular broadcast programming, as well as movies and TV shows. All broadcast channels are encoded into multi-profile streams in real-time using an Envivio 4Caster M2-based encoding platform protected by a 4Manager M:N automated redundancy system. All on demand content is created using Envivio 4Coder Mobile SE offline encoders integrated with a content ingest and playout server.
Local system integration specialists Satcab provided project management services, ensuring a smooth transition from the previously used software encoders to the Envivio hardware-based encoding platform.
