The Device Management Forum is a group of major stakeholders involved in the development, distribution and management of end user telecommunications devices and the services they support. Stakeholders include device manufacturers, network operators, software vendors, distributors and retailers.
Although a key focus at this stage is the management of mobile devices, we are very aware that fixed and mobile devices are merging, devices capabilities and form factors are changing rapidly and an increasingly disparate array of devices and peripherals need to be managed in order to deliver and maintain excellent qualities of service. For this reason we describe our focus simply as device management.
Of course, we recognise also that device management is not an end in itself, but is needed because people use devices for specific purposes like running business applications, sending and receiving messages, managing personal information, playing games and listening to music. Therefore we aim to keep abreast of the applications that drive and influence the development of device management products and services.

Our definition of device management
Unlike many organisations that define device management as a tool, product or technology, we define device management as a process:
“Device management is the process of acquiring, configuring, deploying, securing, maintaining and decommissioning devices in order to deliver specific business and end user benefits.”
Our management scope includes not only the wide range of issues from device choice to device termination, but also the delivery of stakeholder benefits.
